Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 40 Section 54A (Historic Railroad)
If a construction project in Massachusetts involves land formerly used by a railroad company or as a railroad right-of-way, a local permit from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is required. The MIT Central Utilities Plant is located adjacent to the Grand Junction railroad tracks. The railroad track property is owned by MIT, and rights are granted in perpetuity to the State to operate trains through MIT property.
The MassDOT permitting process includes a period of public review and comment. Information about this project's public review meeting dates and locations were posted in local news publications.
